Instructions on Moving a Refrigerator

If you have a refrigerator you need to move, you may feel daunted by the task. You may be moving from one place to another or perhaps you’re buying a new one. It is not a good idea to move a refrigerator alone. You can seriously injure yourself trying to do something like that. There have been stories of folks who were trying to transport a refrigerator all alone and have ended up in the hospital with fractures or internal injuries. This is clearly not the best path. There are better ways to spend your time than laid up in a hospital bed.

Besides needing at least two warm bodies just for the bulk weight of it, if you need to maneuver a flight of stairs, then you need to also have a wheeled cart. Some of it will hinge upon the specific type of refrigerator you are moving. For example, a fridge with only one door is significantly easier to move. If you have a fridge with double doors or a side by side, then this will be much more challenging.

Wrap the power cord around the steel wires at the rear of the refrigerator and tape it to hold it inn place. The purpose of this is to keep you from tripping on the power cord and falling down. In addition, ensure that the doors will not swing open as you are relocating it. Tape them closed if you have to just to make certain. But it is best that you do not utilize duct tape for this since it can leave a sticky residue and possibly do damage to the refrigerator’s finish. Use a tape which may be taken off easily but which will safely secure it.

You may use a caster to move it and if so you need someone to assist you in putting on the caster. If you do this, you can shift it about with ease. Keep the refrigerator standing upright at all times. You don’t want to prop it onto its side because it will ruin the compressor. Oil will drip into it. This will destroy the coils which cool down the entire appliance. There are lines inside the appliance that cannot run properly if they are get oil inside them. This is why it has to stay upright. If you lay the appliance on its side, then the oil will run into it.

Styrofoam is something you will need. Because you need to protect the edges of the appliance. If you have the box that the refrigerator came in, then you can get the Styrofoam out of it. This will keep the appliance free from scraps and nicks as you move it around and navigate walls. If you no longer have the box the fridge came in, then go buy some bubble wrap and cover the appliance.

Another precaution to take is to secure the built in water dispenser if the refrigerator has one. One last task to undertake is to wrap any programmable LED displays in bubble wrap.
